SONIC DRIVE-IN SET TO RETURN TO AUBURN, INDIANA AFTER 14 YEARS
After more than a decade away, Sonic Drive-In is making a comeback in Auburn, Indiana, bringing excitement to fans of the classic fast-food chain. Famous for its retro carhop service and a diverse menu featuring everything from “extra-long cheese coneys” to refreshing slushes, Sonic aims to open its new location by the end of 2025.
A FRESH START AT A NEW ADDRESS
The new Sonic will be located at 1520 Shook Drive, just off I-69, near Home Depot, Cracker Barrel, and the upcoming Mike’s Carwash. This site is not far from Sonic’s original Auburn location at 402 Smaltz Way, which was vacant for years before becoming Salsa Grille. The formal application for the new Sonic was submitted to Auburn’s Building, Planning & Development Department on December 11, 2024. The plan outlines a 1,320-square-foot restaurant, designed with Sonic’s signature drive-in style where customers can enjoy meals from their cars.
A PUBLIC HEARING FOR THE NEW SONIC
A public hearing regarding the new Sonic location is scheduled for Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at 6 p.m. in the Norman E. Yoder Council Chambers at Auburn City Hall (206 East 9th Street). Auburn’s Plan Commission will review the proposal and gather community feedback.
LOOKING BACK: SONIC’S SUDDEN DEPARTURE IN 2010
Sonic’s departure from the area in 2010 was abrupt, closing its Auburn location along with two in Fort Wayne (Lima Road and Maplecrest Road) and one in Van Wert, Ohio. The sudden closures left local fans without their favorite Sonic treats for over a decade.

For chicken lovers, options include Chicken Tenders, Popcorn Chicken, and Chicken Sandwiches. The all-day breakfast menu features Breakfast Toaster Sandwiches and Breakfast Burritos.
SONIC’S PRESENCE IN INDIANA AND OHIO
With its reopening, Sonic will join a network of 25 locations in Indiana, including in Avon, Michigan City, South Bend, Westfield, and Lafayette. Sonic also operates 37 locations in Ohio, demonstrating its strong regional presence.
